What Does an Air Intake Do?

It draws air into the engine cylinders in your car or SUV through the engine's intake manifold, in a process called air induction. The air combines with fuel (sprayed by fuel injectors through intake valves), the spark plugs ignite the mixture, and it burns. This is how the engine produces its own power.

How Does One Work?

The process starts with the engine air filter. Air goes through it, and it captures contaminants, well before they can get into the rest of the motor. Then, the air levels get regulated by a mass airflow sensor, an air metering system, and oxygen sensors. Together, they manage air and exhaust levels, feeding info about them back to an engine control unit (ECU).

In a cold air intake, however, the engine filter gets relocated to just outside the engine compartment, above a wheel well or near a fender. This enables it to take in cooler, denser, and therefore higher-quality air, which can slightly improve engine power output.

What are the Signs of a Bad or Failing One?

There are three. One is a lit Check Engine light on the dash. The other two are unusually fast engine rev and idling at an abnormal speed. The latter usually indicate air intake failure. The best thing to do, if you see such symptoms, is to do an inspection. Plug in a code reader. If its results indicate you need a new system, be sure its genuine.
